Global Pitch Competitions – Including One For Female Founders – Are Helping Vegan And Plant-Based Businesses To Grow And Scale

Raising money is essential to drive plant-based innovation. In addition to private investment, equity crowdfunding and accelerators such as those run by Big Idea Ventures, pitch competitions are giving vegan and plant-based businesses a helping hand.

These type of events – which take inspiration from popular TV shows like ‘Shark Tank’ – have previously been held at physical locations and thereby restricted somewhat to local businesses, but due to the Covid-19 situation many are now going virtual – and global.

Pitch + Plant 2020

This year’s Pitch + Plant 2020 by UK company Vevolution is once again offering £100,000 from a group of investors who have committed to investing a minimum of £20,000. They may even invest higher sums if a particular startup grabs their attention.

Pitch + Plant is open to startups from pre-seed up to Series A.

All applicants will go onto the BETA of the new Vevolution online platform, which is bringing together plant-based businesses and investors. This means applicants’ businesses will be seen by even more investors when the platform launches.

VWS Pathfinder

All-female founders’ summit and pitch competition VWS Pathfinder takes place on 5 December. Hosted by Vegan Women Summit, the top prize of the competition is valued at over $50,000, including a $10,000 cash prize sponsored by Purple Orange Ventures, $35,000 of branding services from Evolution Bureau, global membership to WeWork office space, and more.

“VWS Pathfinder creates a platform to showcase and drive investment to these underfunded and overlooked up-and-coming founders, while bringing out the industry’s top leaders to inspire and educate this future generation,” said Jennifer Stojkovic, founder of Vegan Women Summit.

The summit comes in the wake of VWS’s survey last month of 160 female-identifying founders and executives at plant-based and cell-based food startups around the world, which found  that 48% of respondents say they have faced bias during the fundraising process, with 75% of those women saying they have faced gender bias specifically.
