Crafty Counter has filed a provisional patent for its product WunderEggs, a 100 percent plant-based hard-boiled egg alternative that claims to offer a superior nutrition profile while maintaining the look, feel, and taste of a traditional egg.
Founded by CEO Hema Reddy, the company’s mission is to produce plant-based versions of family favorite foods that are also nutritionally rich. Its first products are protein-based nuggets.
Reddy and her team created WunderEggs in part to fill a gap in the market for plant-based eggs, as well as to help fix a broken food system.
“My inspiration for WunderEggs really came during the initial weeks of the pandemic,” says Reddy, “I loved chicken eggs, as in I could eat them every day for breakfast. But breakfast had become layered with so many other considerations. I had become more aware of the environmental and animal welfare issues driven by factory farming, and then when I saw our food system beginning to break down during COVID-19, that was the last straw for me. My pleasure had become a guilty pleasure, and that was unacceptable to me.”
Crafty Counter just filed a provisional patent with the USPTO for its product, which comprises almonds, cashews, coconut milk, turmeric extract, and black salt as well as the use of a proprietary process to create a taste and texture experience that resembles a chicken egg.
Apart from nuts, the product is free from common allergens, including soy, gluten, grains, eggs, dairy, fish, and shellfish.
The company aims to launch WunderEggs at the end of 2021 if the Covid situation permits; otherwise it will look to release them in early 2022.
