What kind of work do you do/business do you run?

A 100% plant-based organic sourdough bakery café in a Canadian ski resort

What do you love about it?

Interaction with people, eating yummy treats and drinking coffee in an environment which does not abuse animals.

What’s your ‘why’ in life? What drives you?

I have no family to support me – have always worked hard for a good life, more empathetic to animals that have no choice but to be separated from their own kind. I want to live in a beautiful clean world with biodiversity and no suffering.

Why are you a member of the Vegan Women’s Leadership Network?

I want to be part of a community that I cannot find locally, a community on the same mission: to end suffering of sentient beings and a planet which is sustainable to its inhabitants.

What’s been the biggest highlight or ‘wow’ moment of your career/business/professional life?

Less than 1% of care leavers make it to university in the UK alone, so having studied at three of them with a Bachelor’s and post-grad qualifications was huge for me. I was told it was virtually impossible for me to do that, that I wouldn’t even stay at school long enough to take exams.

How do you handle failures, fear and disappointment?

It pushes me to work harder – I don’t accept it.

What would you tell your 16-year-old self?

Learn the art of time management and get up earlier!

Which women inspire you and why?

Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Jane Goodall, Tina James, Heather Mills.

What’s been the biggest obstacle you’ve faced and how has it helped mould who you are now?

Growing up in poverty/care, having family gone at a young age – it gives you the strength to overcome anything, to not be scared of losing everything if it doesn’t work out.

What’s your super-power? What are you amazing at?

Fifteen years teaching and examining in English taught me to rapidly read and find grammar and spelling errors (in other people’s work). I am good at sticking to goals and seeing projects through.

What brings you joy?

Sharing food with friends, being in nature and spotting animals like the purple sea stars and orcas I saw yesterday, or the beavers I saw the day before. Also, snowboarding on a powder day!

How do you define success, and how will you know when you’ve achieved it?

Success is being a change maker, making a difference in your own life or someone else’s.

What’s your vision for yourself and your business/career for the future?

I want to have a house and garden so I can have a cat – I sold my house to start my business. I want our business to become a world-famous destination bakery that just happens to be vegan and I want to inspire others to start vegan businesses, especially eateries.
